I’m up at a 6 day class right now. Due to commitments, posting has been light lately. There was the excellent post by Chris on Night Vision gear, which will be followed up by Aaron and myself on same. We also have some gear posts coming up, by Chris and I. I will also be announcing the availability of the MVT Shield when I get done here and have a moment to take photos and update the website.
Anyway, I have been turning the ideas behind this post around in my head for a few days now, and I wanted to kick over this particular log. No doubt it will cause pain to some.
The genesis of this is the comments I see around the place about killing people on your property in an SHTF situation. This sort of ties in with a couple of related types that I have had a go at before:
1) The ‘retreat sniper.’
2) The ‘selfish prepper.’
3) The radical paranoid individualist, who cannot and will not work with or for anyone. Remember, to be a leader you have to be able to be a follower!
Of course, these are often one and the same character.
Now I know that these statements often come from a mixture of fear and bravado. But let’s examine it:
In my opinion, the following is a realistic generalization:
Personally, I think this is all food for thought that cuts through the internet bravado.
For example, if you have some sort of road or approach to your property, and you actually have it covered by an OP, then what about a sign at a point on the road (perhaps at an unmanned roadblock) warning strangers to stop, they are covered by fire, and they need to wait for a reception party. If they act hostile at that point, perhaps that is reason to engage?
If you are a larger community, perhaps with a perimeter around a small village or whatever, then you will need entry control points (ECPs) where those arriving can be controlled and assessed for entry or denial.
Can you imagine being a family trying to bug out, as so many preppers are preparing for, and having to go cross country due to threats, and facing these guys at every property line? What if you head off the road to what seems like an abandoned farm, but it isn’t, and rather than being warned to turn around, your wife is shot next to you, and then the fire comes down on you and your little kids?
Either these guys are, as is most likely, full of shit on the internet, and they wouldn’t have the balls to pull the trigger in the event, or they are a bunch of paranoid selfish psychopaths who will kill anyone that gets near to their retreat.
Where is the judgement, where is the morality, where is the charity?
Of course, not shooting someone and talking to them entails a little bit of risk right? And if you are a selfish type hunkered down with your stash then the cowardly way out is just to shoot everyone you see. Until it isn’t, and you are rolled up by someone whose family you murdered.
Let’s give some of these standard prepper assumptions, memes and accepted ideas a good examination for veracity, eh?
