1. Do you have any photos that show the mod more clearly?
2. I too like the ALICE pack but have had problems with surplus packs. They seem to all be dry rotted so the straps and webbing want to tear out when loaded down. I did, however, find a source for new packs. Fox Outdoor had a contract to manufacture new packs for Korea (assuming South K). The one I ordered was supposed to be made from 1000 denier material, tho it may be 600 D. Appears to be a good product though I haven’t taken it out for a spin yet. Just FYI.
Or: keep the frame and straps and buy the MALICE pack from Tactical Tailor?
It was literally just two simple strips or webbing. I used heavy duty outdoor grade thread you get at Walmart and a Singer home sewing machine set on a decent intention will do all you need..
2 tabs of nylon webbing..
Where/how its attaches to the bottom..(bottom strap will feed from the other direction then i have it.
back of the MOLLE pouch..
Id stay away from FOX outdoor, just my opinion but you wont get a Mil grade pack, just a civilian, good enough for now, pack that will fail under use. As to the ALICE, Ive seen a few rotten packs, but its been few and far between. I never have issue finding great ones up here. Perhaps because the Military is thick around here, I dunno..hope the pics help..lemme know..
Never heard of a MALICE pack till now..ha.. 😉
It’s an I gear/ruck post from a month or so back…
Found it..1st try, maybe i subconsciously remembered seeing it.
(Incase other want to look at the thread)
It’s in a gear/ruck post from a month or so back…
Duly noted; only time will tell as to whether or not this pack will hold up. (BTW, you can purchase ALICE-to-MOLLE adapters to attach MOLLE pouches to older ALICE gear.)
2nd the Alice Pack with straps and Malice Pack 2 from tactical tailor My alice pack was worn one pocket torn I sewed it it was usable.
Found a site where the malice pack 2 was for less than their (Tactical Tailor) sight.
Worth every penny great pack a bit more room and outside pockets well worth the update.
Fox, Condor, etc. have been, let us say, not as robust as domestic surplus in the past. One issue was a serious weakness of their thread vs mil-spec. That being said, there are rumblings that these issues are being addressed, so only time will tell.
The “MALICE” is the TT version of the ALICE mods, so prevalent 10-20 years ago, where additional pouches were added. It’s a good ruck, in 1,000D, and newer colors/camo, but, you also pay extra for all of that.
For a guy on a budget, the issue large ALICE can be mod’d, just like Bergman has done, with all sorts of shit. If you add two sustainment pouches like this, plus maybe a 3-mag bandoleer to the top flap, roughly 50% of the ruck is now woodland camo.
In addition, I would strongly recommend the Down East polymer frame. It is a 100% improvement over the metal frame. And you can then monkey around with the suspension a bit.
Good information from all. As always, I appreciate the input.
BTW Diz, I think we are sorta kinda neighbors!
Hey cool, let me know when you want to go up to Max’s and train. I’d like to get together with guys in this area and get up to speed on the basics, so we can hit the ground running in class.
