Since I raised the notion of starting my own forum, I have received some very useful feedback, both in comments and via email. I have also received a number of offers to help either on the technical or forum running side.
Thank you, that is really helpful.
What I am going to do is meet with the folks who professionally did my website and see what they can do in terms of duct taping a forum onto it. That will be Monday. I will then proceed from there, as necessary.
One of the big things raised is: Why a Forum?
Also raised: isn’t that just going to turn out the same as everyone else’s forums. Max’s way or the highway! We are right, you are wrong, get out of our virtual team room where we sit and groom our massive egos. 😉
Well, I think starting a forum needs to be well thought out, precisely to avoid that sort of result.
I think that a key driver behind the concept is to create a forum that is specifically aimed at supporting citizen tactical operations. Armed citizens, not military or LEO. That will take a lot of the tacti-cool out if it right away, because I don’t see many of the fanboys wanting to join.
I don’t want a moderated forum, by forum Nazis, because I want free speech and expression. However, that will probably not stand the test of reality, particularly when the trolls start appearing. So some moderation will be needed. I am toying with the idea of having a one time paid joining fee, in order to dissuade trolls. Clearly there needs to be some level of moderation to deter spammers and troll operative from turning the forum into an eternal flame war.
But I want to deter the sort for mentality I have seen, along the lines of : these topics have been discussed on this forum before, you are a newbie. We have reached a conclusion that supports our tacti-cool ignorance and therefore you are wrong. Stop posting. Shut up. Let’s stroke our fan-boy egos.
So really, I want to create an environment where concepts can be developed, people can disagree, and we can all learn. I don’t even really care about profanity – big boys rules right? I just want to keep it constructive. If we can take some of the discussions that go on in blog comments to a forum, without the delay of me having to check and approve each comment (believe me, I need to, I read the stalker-troll comments that come in…) then we are doing a good thing.
I see this as all part of the greater good to develop real tactical training for citizens, diverting the stream away from the tacti-cool fanboy nonsense.
